Volunteering FAQ

Who will be participating in VITA remote tax preparation and in person intake?

At this time, only returning volunteers are eligible to participate in VITA in person intake and remote tax preparation. We hope to invite new volunteers to the 2022 tax season / 2021 tax year.

Can I use my personal computer?

Accounting Aid Society will loan each volunteer a secure laptop computer for remote use. There will be a designated contactless pick-up day at our Oakland Financial Hub tax site in Ferndale. We can also provide an additional monitor upon request.

Do volunteers communicate with clients?

All communication with clients will be done by the Intake Specialists to ensure the client’s tax documents are complete and ready for preparation.

How do clients upload their documents?

During their intake clients will receive a link to upload their tax documents to Sharefile, a secure file sharing system. For clients that don’t have a computer, cellphone, and/or internet service, we will provide in-person intake.

Do I need to volunteer at set times?

Volunteers can prepare taxes remotely anytime from Monday-Sunday that works for their schedule.

What is VITA ACE and remote tax preparation?

VITA ACE (Accessible, Convenient, Electronic) is free, virtual, contactless tax preparation that allows taxpayers to have their returns prepared without leaving their home. Working with a volunteer Intake Specialist over the phone, clients submit their tax documents and information to Accounting Aid using their smartphone, email and secure file transferring software. The tax return is then prepared remotely by a volunteer Tax Preparer, and the client is notified upon to electronically sign and authorize the completed return.

What is the commitment for the VITA remote tax preparation?

Because remote tax preparers can volunteer from their home at any time, we are asking that volunteers commit to 5-10 tax returns per week. This commitment helps Accounting Aid Society’s staff to fill the right number of appointments.

How do I certify this year?

This year we are hosting two certification “town halls,” one for the basic certification and one for the advanced certification. The town halls will cover new tax law and a walk through of the test questions. Both of these certification town halls will be hosted on Zoom and recorded for anyone who cannot attend. The Zoom links for the town halls will come soon so please be on the lookout for those.
