Volunteering FAQ

What are the time requirements to volunteer as a tax preparer?

We ask that Volunteer Tax Preparers commit to a minimum of 6 shifts of volunteering, over the course of the tax season. It goes by fast! If this is an issue, give us a call and we can figure out something that works for you.

Is there any cost to volunteer?

Nope! We provide the materials and training you will need to volunteer and help make a huge impact in the lives of Michigan families.

What is the training like?

For our Volunteer Tax Preparers, we have several options for you to choose from, we provide a self study, CPE certification session and in-person sessions. Trainings will begin as son as mid-November and inperson sessions will begin December and January. All volunteers must complete training, and complete three certification tests: Intake/Interview & Quality Review, Standards of Conduct, and the Basic (or Advanced) test. You will also need to submit an annual background check and a Volunteer Agreement (IRS form 13615). We ask that all testing be completed through the IRS Link and Learn platform Confused? Don't worry! We will share information with you via email once it is time to train.

Where are the tax prep sites?

During tax season, we average around 23 tax prep locations across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Livingston Counties in Southeast Michigan. although some stay open to serve Detroit-area families year round. You can view the sites by clicking here.

Do I need a computer to volunteer?

As our Volunteer Tax Preparer training is held in a live online classroom, a computer is required to complete the training. If you anticipate this being an issue, please reach out and we can discuss what options may be available to you. Computers and all other materials will be provided once you arrive at the tax site to volunteer.

Do I have to be an accountant to be a Volunteer Tax Preparer?

No way! We have volunteers from all walks of life. Our training is designed to teach you everything you need to confidently prepare tax returns.

I have another question that isn't addressed here. Can we set a time to talk?

Absolutely! The best way to reach us is to email volunteer@accountingaidsociety.org. We can set a time for a phone call or chat through email if you prefer.

Can I volunteer with my group (work, school, etc)?

Yes! We would love to partner with your group or organization. Please send us an email at volunteer@ accountingaidresources.org for more information about group volunteering.
